INCIDENT WITH B-52 BOMBER IN LITHUANIA: APARTMENT BUILDING WAS DESTROYED
On the territory of Lithuania, in the Klaipeda region, an incident occurred with one of the US Air Force bombers deployed on the territory of the Baltic States. During the planned flight of B-52 strategic bomber occurred an accidental discharge of the B-61 nuclear bomb model.
The details of the incident are not yet specified – an investigation is under way. From an expert point of view, the most likely causes may be: a pilot error, an electricity power supply shortage, or a malfunction of the launch drum.
It is well known that the nuclear bomb model fell on 2 floor apartment building. As a result the gas supply system was damaged and there was a fire. Victims are not yet reported.
In this regard, it is worth mentioning a series of incidents involving the B-52 bombers:
in 1958 the incident occurred in North Carolina, when, as a result of a pilot's error, a bomb was dropped on the apartment building. Six people were injured;
in 1961 an accident occurred near Goldsboro, North Carolina. A B-52 Stratofortress carrying two 3-4 megaton Mark 39 nuclear bombs broke up in mid-air, dropping its nuclear payload in the process;
in 1966 B-52 crash occurred when a B-52G bomber of the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command collided with a KC-135 tanker during mid-air refuelling over the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Spain. The B-52G broke apart, killing three of the seven crew members aboard. Of the four Mk28-type hydrogen bombs the B-52G carried, three were found on land near the small fishing village of Palomares.
in 2008 a B-52H bomber crashed in the area of the Island of Guam, all 6 crew members were killed;
in 2016 while taking off from the Andersen airbase on the Island of Guam, a bird was caught in the B-52 engine. The plane made an emergency landing, but rolled out of the band, and as a result of the accident completely burnt out;
in 2017 an engine fell from a B-52 Stratofortress bomber of the U.S. Air Force while the aircraft was flying over North Dakota. The incident occurred during a training flight near Minot Air Force Base. The engine broke up and debris landed in unpopulated area.
Equally disturbing are incidents involving our troops who serve on the territory of NATO allies:
in 2015 NATO Eurofighter Typhoon while protecting the sky over the Baltic States lost an external fuel tank before take-off at Emary airfield;
in 2017 a US Army truck got into an accident in the west of Poland. As a result of the overturning of the car two American servicemen were injured;
Cases of drunken fights and violations of the public order involving US soldiers often occur either.
